Energy Management ISO 50001 Certification

Overview

The energy management standards EN 16001 and ISO 50001 are to help to increase energy efficiency, relieve the environment and reduce energy costs.

Who can certified?

Basically energy management can be conducted by companies and organizations independently from the size or sector. For energy intensive companies, in particular, the standards offer comprehensive systematic requirements and guides for successful implementation. As for small and medium-sized enterprises, the standards initiate them in environmental management with a focus on the partial area of energy. As for companies with an existing environmental management system, the standards can contribute to focusing on the environmental factor of energy even more.

Customer benefits

The purpose of the energy specific standards EN 16001 and ISO 50001 consists in establishing systems and processes necessary to improve the energy related performance. Use of the standards is to help energy management to systematically contribute to reducing energy consumption, energy costs, greenhouse gas emissions or other environmental impacts. The systematic approach can be found in the organization’s energy management. Based on energy policy and the definition of the strategic and operational goals, action plans will be planned, implemented and assessed.

Examples of items covered by the term of energy include electricity, fuels, steam and vapour, heat, compressed air and renewable energies. The term of use of energy is understood very comprehensively, e.g. lighting, ventilation, heating, cooling, process heat, transport, processes and production lines.

EN 16001 strongly follows the structure of ISO 14001. In contrast to EN 16001, ISO 50001 includes the following items:

energy related assessment
energy related starting point
energy performance indicators
purchasing of energy services, products, facilities and energy

The requirements are basically broken down into

management responsibility
energy policy
legal compliance
energy planning
energy related assessment
energy indicators
strategic and operational goals

The organization must establish and document the scope and balancing limits of its energy management system. Top management must nominate a Management Representative.

Energy related assessment serves to analyze use of energy, determine the sources of energy, assess energy consumption in the past and present and estimate the future needs. In this respect, the areas with the most important energy consumption will be identified. Energy policy includes commitment to continual improvement of energy specific performance. For measuring and monitoring energy related performance, adequate energy performance indicators will be established.

How to certify your System

Application for certification by Organization.
The applicant must present written documentation of the fulfillment of the requirements.
The certification body appoints auditors.
The auditors inspect the work done at the organization.
After  successfully completing the steps 1-4, the applicant obtains a certificate with the authorization to carry the mark of conformity. The certificate is  valid for three years, as long as the requirements for the maintenance of the certificate are fulfilled.
Re-audit yearly, to verify the effective and universal quality of the service.
